BARMY ARMY

## The Cricket Test in Dharamshala: A Memorable Experience

The Cricket Test in Dharamshala from March 7th to 9th was an unforgettable event for many reasons. The ambience was excellent, the crowd was not too large, and the 3-kilometer walk to and from the stadium added to the experience.

One of the highlights was the presence of the Barmy Army. About 500 members of this passionate group of English cricket fans cheered on their team throughout the series. Additionally, around 2000 English tourists, including some British Indians with British accents, coincided their travels to India with the Dharamshala Test match.

I met a variety of interesting individuals during the match. A 47-year-old Englishman working in Madrid attended because of his love for cricket. He planned to travel to Rishikesh and Nepal afterward. He missed the beer available in English stadiums and was surprised by the stringent security checks here.

Another solo English software engineer had an adventurous journey. He traveled to Gilgit, Pakistan, via the Wagah border, returned to Dharamshala the same way, and planned to continue to Nepal.

A retired Professor of Veterinary Science from Oxford, along with his biochemistry professor wife, were on a two-week tour. They traveled from London to Amritsar, Shimla, Dharamshala, and planned a homestay in a village in Chamba. Their itinerary allowed them to enjoy a few days of the Test match.

The match provided ample opportunities for engaging discussions about cricket, unlike the faster-paced T20 and one-day matches. A young cricket enthusiast from Udhampur, Jammu, updated me on the latest in Indian and English cricket.

The Test match was also beneficial for local businesses. Hotels, taxis, and other services enjoyed good business despite the match ending on the third day instead of the fifth. The stadium facilities were commendable, and the crowd, mainly from Punjab, added to the vibrant atmosphere.

It was interesting to note the presence of over 40 T-shirt and cricket hat sellers from as far as Mumbai, although they might not have fared as well due to the smaller footfall compared to big city matches. The Dharamshala stadium was praised by the Madrid-based Englishman as one of the most beautiful, rivaled only by Cape Town's stadium.

As infrastructure improves, Dharamshala's stadium will likely attract more cricket matches. This match was a testament to the unique and enriching experiences cricket fans can have in this picturesque location.
